Jackie’s expertise lies in the use of visual methods to structure and drive participatory action research and community empowerment processes. From 1984 she pioneered participatory video practice both as co-founding director of Real Time, and author of Participatory Video a definitive methods guide, and her recent research has developed methodology in order to negotiate the risks more ethically. Her work prioritises extremely the most marginalised communities, such as people living in poverty, refugees, people with disabilities and mental-health issues, elderly people, vulnerable women, and homeless people. Jackie convened the visual methods programme during the first phase of Participate (2012-14) working with partners in India, the Palestinian West Bank, and Kenya. She is co-investigator on the current participate research, which is exploring pathways from understanding intersecting inequalities to more inclusive and equitable relationships between marginalised people and influential duty bearers.
